It makes the recordings sound artificial to me, kind of what one would call colored (like what excessive EQing will do). Try poking into the headphone jack with a toothpick to see if it helps getting sound output working via the speakers. Ubuntu 14.04 No Sound Wizardry? If at the next start up, you hear the login sound at the lock screen, you know it worked like a charm. The sound is perfect in the virtual player too - but not the original default player - Banshee (I removed this program as I was not able to “un-default” it).
