So the failure seems to be at a lower level than the typical alsa problem. Make sure to test ALL audio jacks/ports at the front AND the back of your PC. Not the answer you're looking for? Trying the pacmd command in startup applications, however, did not solve the problem. Just curious. If sound is not working in both Windows and Ubuntu, please check your motherboard's manual to see if any jumpers are badly configured or missing.
