But the speaker and headphone levels get muted and never back to un-muted. Your master, headphone and speaker levels should be un-muted and high enough for you to listen to anything. I.e I would not be able to run alsa-mixer, or hear any sound. Finally found a solution with the link you provided.

I have fallen in love with Linux but the annoyance of no sound is the only thing turning me off! The second time I had lost sound after upgrading my system and doing a clean install to Linux Mint 15. In the windows settings/audio it shows the built in speakers, the sound from skype message doesn't play and no login/logoff sound, no drum. I've been told by several people that it's because Pulse doesn't quite work properly.
